The Dragon Gods

Four of the Great Dragons that fought in the War with the Old Ones took up places as Gods in the Pattern of Sedena. They stand for the various aspects of Power: Strength, Cunning, Knowledge, and Wisdom.

The Dragon Gods are:

Krym-nak-mar the Star

Aspect - Wisdom and Power

Color - Blue White

Cult Titles - the High Flyer, Lord of Power, the Star of Wisdom

Krym-nak-mar is pictured as a Great Dragon of blue white color, with a long body, four legs, and massive bat-like wings. He is always represented with brilliant light flowing out of his body, and his fore-claws usually carry a scepter or a sword.

The strongest and wisest of the Dragon Gods, Krym-nak-mar holds himself aloof from the struggles of lesser beings. He plans his moves against the Elder Gods carefully, drawing upon the strengths of his brothers to foil their every move.

Kormath of the Ice

Aspect - Knowledge

Colors - White

Cult Titles - Lord of Frost, The Sage, The Star of Memory

Representations of Kormath show a white, almost translucent drake, with long wings and a deeply amused expression. He is the God of Knowledge, concerned with the acquisition of information about everything. Unlike Skydu, who is a historian, Kormath gathers practical knowledge, covering topics ranging from horticulture to flower arrangement.

Kormath's tremendous skill in all areas of endeavor makes him invaluable to his brothers. No matter what the situation, Kormath knows some odd bit of lore that can help.

Styphon the Black

Aspect - Trickery and Cunning

Colors - Black

Cult Titles - the Shadow, Master of Four Fold Truths, The Star of Trickery

Styphon is never painted, only sculpted from obsidian or similar dark, clear stones. Existing sculptures of him suggest rather than portray the form of a small, coiled dragon, with its wings folded against its flanks. Styphon is the God of Trickery; his tactics during the Great War often spelled the difference between success and destruction.

Styphon went mad during the Rune War, breaking the Dragon Rite and dragging it down into evil and depravity. For centuries, he was the most dangerous and deadly of the 'Dark Gods', manipulating events to suit his own whims. His cult spread far and wide carried by Folk who saw a chance for their own aggrandizement.

Rumor has it that the Black Dragon God has changed his ways recently, recreating the Dragon Rite of old.

Zandragal of the Ruby Scales

Aspect - Strength, Fire

Colors - Deep, Fiery Red

Cult Titles - the Wild Fire, Lord of the Dawn, The Star of Flames

The Wild Fire is depicted as a massive bodied dragon, nearly half as thick as he is long, with scales that are every shade of red in a wild, chaotic pattern. He is the only dragon to ever reliably master the element of Fire, commanding legions of Elemental Spirits as well as dragons.

Of all of the Dragon Gods, Zandragal is the most direct and accessible. He does not retreat from the world, preferring to stay involved with the day to day activities of his servants. Many of his priests speak with him in their dreams on a frequent basic, conveying information that otherwise might be lost.

Although the fiercest of the four brothers, Zandragal realizes that Krym-nak-mar is wiser, Kormath more intelligent, and Styphon more subtle. Zandragal is content to support his brothers, forming the lynchpin upon which most of the Dragon God's plans turn.

The Dragon Rite

Unlike the other Gods, the Dragon Gods maintain an active and powerful cult. Called the Dragon Rite, the cult has gone though many incarnations. At first, it was a source of hope and inspiration for the Elder Races. Later, after the madness of Styphon, the Dragon Rite came to represent all that was dark and evil in the souls of mortals. Rumors claim that the old Dragon Rite rising from the ashes, battling against the dark forces that now control their once noble cult.

In essence, there are now two Dragon Rites:

The two Dragon Rites engage in a constant and bitter struggle that often breaks into open warfare. The Fire of Itmas in the fall of 346 is attributed to a battle between the Dragon Rites, as is the murder of several dozen public officials the year before. The two cults constantly raid one another's temples, attack each other on the street, and use magical curses to break the will of the opponent.

Cult Beliefs

Both versions of the cult believe in the Responsibility of Power: that an individual with Power has a responsibility to the world to use it. They disagree, however, on how this power should be used. The Black Dragon Rite feels that Power should be used in secret, for the benefit of its wielder. The Dragon Rite holds that Strength should be used with Knowledge, Wisdom, and Cunning, to further the ends of the Folk.

Both cults actively work to prevent the return of the Elder Gods. The Black Dragon Rite does so both out of a sense of responsibility and a sense of self-preservation. The Dragon Rite opposes the Elder Gods on principle, holding that they are the ultimate expression of power wrongly used. The two groups will never work together, permitting the Elder Gods to gain a foothold in the world rather than give an inch to the opposition.

The two cults also share the belief that the pursuit of power is something to be encouraged. In the Black Dragon Rite, this belief is taken to its logical extreme; the pursuit of any kind of power is encouraged, regardless of the cost. The Dragon Rite holds that power must be earned, understood, and controlled, or it will inevitably overmaster the person who wields it.

Cult Rituals

One of the known rituals of the Dragon Rite is the "Challenge of Honor". Following ritual forms that re-enact the battle between Krym-nak-mar and the Elder God Morilith, any person may challenge any member of the Dragon Rite to a duel. The challenged must accept, and his companions and allies are not allowed to interfere. All such challenges are to the death. Quarter may not be offered, nor surrender accepted.

Servants of the Dragons

Dragon Spirits serves all four of the Dragon Gods. Krym-Nak-Mar sends Lesser and Greater Drakes to aid his priests. Kormath will usually send an Ice Dragon or a Light Winged Snake. Styphon sends Night Drakes exclusively, while Zandragal has been known to send War Drakes and Phoenixes when called upon for aid.

Symbol of the Dragon Gods

The symbol of the Dragon Gods is a circle composed of four intertwined lines - blue/white for Krym-nak-mar to the north, white for Kormath to the east, black for Styphon to the south, and red for Zandragal to the west. Any Servant of the Dragon Gods can draw this symbol in the air or on the ground, in lines of fire, for no cost.
