Spirits Primer
There are twelve types of spirits in Sedena, each with unique powers and abilities. The information contained in this document is for general reference only - it represents the general knowledge acquired by Sorcerers during the course of their training. Ask the gamemaster for more details about one or more of the categories.
Spiritual Potency
All Spirits have Potency, an indicator of how powerful the Spirit is. Most magicians recognize the following levels of Spirits:
- Minor
- Pot 1 to 10. Minor Spirits are the most common sort. They are not fully sentient beings, having limited awareness and intellect.
- Normal
- Pot 11 to 20. Normal Spirits are somewhat less common than Minor spirits, but exhibit a level of consiousness that must be considered intelligent. Most normal spirits of the same type can converse with each other.
- Strong
- Pot 21 to 30. Strong Spirits are able to directly and powerfully effect the world around them. They often command other, lesser spirits.
- Major
- Pot 31 to 40. Major Spirits are able commanders, and beings of awesome power in their own right. A major spirit that is 'on the loose' can be a danger to even the most powerful of magicians or warriors.
- Great
- Pot 41 to 50. Great Spirits are fortunately rare, usually only encountered with a Sorcerer brings them into the world. These awesome spirits are capable of feats of power that rival those of the most powerful mortal magicians.
- Lord
- Pot 51 to 60. Spirit Lords command legions of other spirits in addition to their own tremendous powers. A Spirit Lord can be summoned and trapped by mortal Sorcerers, although it requires tremendous effort.
- Noble
- Pot 61 to 70. Noble Spirits come to Sedena only when sent by their Kings, unless a powerful group of mortal sorcerers performs a great summoning. These spirits command almost unimaginable power, able to rend the world if they so choose.
- Royal
- Pot 71+. Royal Spirits are powerful enough to command any spirit of their type other than another Royal. They rule vast 'kingdoms', with thousands of servants and unthinkable treasures. Royal Spirits are almost never encountered on Sedena; even the Faery Royalty hides deep in the Forest of Faery.
Types of Spirits
There are nine categories of spirits; one category has four types of Spirits within it. These categories are:
- Angels
-The Iron Stars are a kind of spirit that seems drawn to protect the Younger Races. They manifest near humans and wolven, usually acting in the benefit of one or more parties. They seem to have powers similar to that of some Faery, but are also known to wield elemental and sorcerous powers. Angels usually appear as either normal animals or human-like figures. They are easily detected by their pure blue aura, which fades into the land around them.
- Demons
- are a strange, dangerous race of spirits that dwell in an unthinkable other world. Most demons have some knowledge of Wizardry. Their only motivation seems to be destruction, or the subjugation of other life forms, but they are also shrewd bargainers and deadly tacticians. They take on a variety of mind-numbing and horrific forms, apparently designed to intimidate or impress mortals.
- Dead
- are still accessible, as echoes in the Pattern of Sedena. Although the Dead cannot learn, and do not know about anything that happened after they died, they are an invaluable source of information. Some Sorcerers contact the spirits of the Dead exclusively, learning archaic magic and ancient secrets.
- Dragon
- are the strange spirits who seem to dwell in the world between worlds. The Dragons are intelligent and self-confident, if somewhat difficult to deal with. Most Dragons will not speak to those who wield Wizardry, and many will attack someone with Taint on sight.
- Elemental
- spirits are expressions of pure natural power, primal forces that are difficult to reason or communicate with. Most Elementals possess only one Element, but a few are composed of two, three, or even four Elements. These spirits, called mixed Elementals, are some of the most powerful beings in the world. The four Elements are:
- Air
- spirits are beings of pure wind and storm. They travel everywhere in the world, riding among the clouds.
- Earth
- spirits of stone and earth. Earth Elementals can exist in any environment, from a plowed field to a volcano. Most are strangely nurturing beings, given to protecting their 'little children'.
- Fire
- spirits are composed entirely of fire and light. Most appear as lizards or small children, although a few take on less mortal shapes. Fire elementals desire to consume, burn, and destroy above all else.
- Water
- elementals are the spirits of rivers, lakes, streams, and seas. They have trouble noticing mortals, and when they do are apt to quickly forget them. Most Water spirits do not take on a visible form at all, staying merged with the water that makes up their being.
- Faery
- are the spirits of Sedena, its mountains, forests, rivers, streams, lakes, cities, and peoples. They dwell though out the world, often acting as protectors and guides for mortal beings. Curiously, some seem to be able to wield magic on par with anything that the Elder Races can accomplish.
- Fallen Faery
- are Faery who choose, for whatever reason, to resist the constant change of the Pattern. These Faery work to disrupt the hold of the Elder and Younger Races, attempting to restore a 'pure' world where Faery ruled. The Goblins and the Orkan are the most numerous of the Fallen Faery, but other kinds exist.
- Old Ones
- Although the Elder Gods are banished beyond recall, many of the creatures and servants that they created during the Great War still exist, slumbering until a Sorcerer or unlucky miner disturbs them. These Spirits are beings of incredible powers, able to destroy entire armies. Unfortunately, anyone who attempts to command them quickly finds himself under the sway of the Old Ones.
- Undead
- are mortals who refused to die. Spurning the powers of death and fate, they threw their lot in with the forces of magic, attaining something like immortality. The Undead wield the powers that they had in life, and are able to slowly learn and grow as they continue. Many, after several hundred years of undeath, go completely insane.
